‘Big Swell, Sunny Day, Cronulla 1965’ – Artist Jeff Quigley.

”Big Swell, Sunny Day, Cronulla 1965′ – Latest artwork by Jeff Quigley “Just bringing back the Memories.” I think I have ‘sorta’ finished this one but I know I will be touching it up for another two weeks. ((Artist know what I mean )) The photo is a bad one.

Being a child of the Sutherland Shire I spent a lot of time with great mates down at Cronulla Beach. It was a wonderful place to have fun and enjoy the surf. My home was four stations from the beach. My painting depicts Cronulla from around the year of 1965 when I was but a 10 year old pup. My main reference piece for this painting was an old post card I had acquired years ago plus some additional artistic licence.

One of our favourite experiences was to go over the back of the large rock pool and ride the backwash wave out and into the incoming breaker. We never did it when the waves were as big as in the painting of course.

IF I GROW UP I WANNA BE? – Artist Jeff Quigley.

If I Grow Up I Wanna Be? is the title of this piece.
Apologies for the poor quality of the photo. It was a proper B to get a half decent shot.

If I Grow Up?, acrylic on canvas, framed and rather large at 79cm x 79cm.

This one has been floating around in the back of my head for some time. With the current world situation where it appears to me that we humans are doing our best to just exterminate other human beings. It is just crazy, so many wars, so many unnecessary deaths.

I have strong opinions of what might become of the young victims of these confrontations. Their futures, their mental state and their desires. After witnessing cruel atrocity after cruel atrocity, families ripped and torn apart, communities destroyed and all before their young eyes.

Just imagine if our kids and grandkids were witnessing this brutality on a daily basis.

Unfortunately I believe revenge might be locked in as one of the long term goals. We will be reading and hearing about revenge incidents for decades to come.

SOUTH BOUND CLEAR – Artist Jeff Quigley.

South Bound Clear is the title of this piece. Back in a previous town where we lived I had a few mates that ended up working on the railway maintenance gangs. The individual in the painting is not one of them but the painting refreshed some great old memories and yarns.

One of the mates had Tshirts printed. They read “I might not be smart but I can lift heavy things” (Hey Trotter)

NSW broadguage in the painting by the way, not pouncy Qld narrow guage rubbish.

Again the ongoing apology, not a good photo at all, one day, one day I’ll get it right.

“South Bound Clear”, Framed, acrylic on canvas, sized at 40cm x 50cm.

BIRD ON A WIRE – Artist Jeff Quigley.

(Painting No2 in my ongoing series of Leonard Cohen inspired pieces)

‘”Like a bird on a wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free”

‘Bird on a wire’ my latest, is a unframed piece, acrylic on canvas, 58cm x 88cm. I will be submitting this one for display in the upcoming Members Let’s celebrate the New Year Exhibition at the Emu Park Art Gallery which will open on February the 5th

As previously mentioned, I have always loved the music of Leonard Cohen. Years spent sitting around the record player listening to Cohen on vinyl LPs rotating at 33rpm.

In November 2024 I decided that I was going to attempt to do a series of Cohen art pieces using some of his brilliant song lyrics as my inspiration. This piece is the 2nd work I have created for my Cohen Series inspired from one of Cohens best known songs, Bird on a Wire.

THE OPEN TRY LINE- BUSH FOOTY – PARKIE STYLE – Artist Jeff Quigley.

‘The Open Try Line – Bush Footy – Parkie Style’ is a large unframed piece, acrylic on canvas, 122cm x 92cm, again one of the biggest and most complex paintings I have undertaken. I have had this idea floating around in my head for some time.

I just love my “bush” footy and took great joy in putting this celebratory piece together as the Local Emu Park side won their first ever A-Grade Mens premiership this August. The long wait was now over after 32 years.

This piece depicts my joy of attending a local match surrounded by good friends and some keen family members, all watching as the Emus conjure up another four pointer.

I’ve just finished watching the Leonard Cohen Series ‘So Long Maryanne’ on SBS and it was during the process of watching this that the light bulb went on.
