”Big Swell, Sunny Day, Cronulla 1965′ – Latest artwork by Jeff Quigley “Just bringing back the Memories.” I think I have ‘sorta’ finished this one but I know I will be touching it up for another two weeks. ((Artist know what I mean )) The photo is a bad one.
Being a child of the Sutherland Shire I spent a lot of time with great mates down at Cronulla Beach. It was a wonderful place to have fun and enjoy the surf. My home was four stations from the beach. My painting depicts Cronulla from around the year of 1965 when I was but a 10 year old pup. My main reference piece for this painting was an old post card I had acquired years ago plus some additional artistic licence.
One of our favourite experiences was to go over the back of the large rock pool and ride the backwash wave out and into the incoming breaker. We never did it when the waves were as big as in the painting of course.
With every train (known as red rattlers) that terminated at Cronulla before returning back to the city, you would witness a mass migration of beach goers heading north along the promenade. Their destination, the northern beaches, North Cronulla, Elouera and Wanda. It was always an enjoyable experience watching the passing parade.
‘Big Swell, Sunny Day, Cronulla 1965’ is framed, acrylic on canvas, a large painting 88cm x 58cm. It is the third of three new works that hopefully will be hung in the next members exhibition at the Emu Park Art Gallery. That exhibition will be opening on the 22nd of October.
If you have not visited the Local Emu Park Gallery and Gift Shop then I highly recommend that you do so. Admission is FREE and the Gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm
